I find that the first meal I eat at any new city/country will have a huge impact on how I view it. Therefore, I tend to ensure that my first meal in a new city/country would be the best meal of the trip. After much research, I chose No Signboard @ Vivocity. I chose the Vivocity location because it has air conditioning, and it is open during the afternoon.
Ordering was quick as I knew exactly what I wanted. The food came very quickly. We were the only table in the entire restaurant at 3pm. The Cereal Shrimp came first and it was the best dish of the meal.
It is both sweet and savory. Crunchy from the fried cereal yet tender from the shrimp. No Signboard fished the shrimp right out of their tank prior to cooking so it is extremely fresh. My parents proclaimed cereal prawns the best shrimp dish we ever ate. I concur. =) We loved it so much we also ordered it at Jumbo Seafood Singapore @ Clarke Quay a few nights later and it was not this delicious.
No Signboard is also famous for their chilli crab, so we ordered that as well. My parents enjoyed the flavor of the chilli which is curry like in consistency and taste, but with sweet and sour undertones. I did not like the chilli sauce because I prefer Indian and Thai curries over Singapore and Malaysian curries. This dish reminds me of the curry crab hubby and I had at Somboon Seafood in Bangkok. Somboon’s version was better and cheaper. $10USD versus $60USD.
The mud crab was really big, the claw was the size of my iPhone. The meat was firm and tasteless. You need to dip it into the chilli sauce for it to have flavor. Pity that I am not a fan of the chilli sauce. Perhaps it is an acquired taste. I used to not like Tom Yum soup, but now it is one of my all time favorite soups.
We also ordered a vegetable dish in fish stock. This was extremely delicious as well. We finished everything even the soup which was not fishy at all. I am not sure what the name of the vegetable is but I know that it is a vegetable not found in the US. It comes in two varieties, green with pink accents, and the pure green one above.
My parents and I really enjoyed our meal at No Signboard Singapore. It was the best meal of our Singapore trip and one of those meals that we will always remember. Good food and good company.
